Arboretum Part II

August 26, 2007 / by elliott

I did get back to Davis, California to see the 10-piano concert as I mentioned in which over 300 piano students from all over the world, practiced for nearly 2 weeks to perform simultaneously the same piece! But before the recital, I was able to get back to the Arboretum in Davis, Ca. and shoot some pics of the white flower garden, the oak grove, and the perennial central Ca plant section, in addition to getting a couple of pics from a distance of my 2 grandchildren who simply "bowed" at the 10 piano until they become more proficient in Suzuki piano techniques. This is an amazing technique!

Now, to post a few pics from the Arboretum and my 2 grand-daughters on stage! Ruth Risdon Storer was the first pediatrician in Yolo County and an avid gardener and contributor and champion of gardens that would withstand the climate of the central valley

125 species, varieties, etc of oak trees found all over the world are in this special oak grove which is a "gold mine" for research at UCD:

I spotted a few egrets nesting in a tree near the Peter Shields Oak Grove:

Now the Carolee Shields White Flower Garden, where my older son was married, ie in the Gazebo, and I will try to upload this:

Iceberg White Rose bush:

Now, for the best pics: Our two granddaughters at the 10 piano recital in Sacramento, California August 18, 2007:

Well, I hope when you get into the Sacramento, California area,(Davis, Ca is about 10 miles west of the capital Sacramento) you will consider taking a little tour of the UCD Arboretum. My son's father-in-law said to me at our little get-together after the 10 piano recital that this Arboretum was featured on an educational TV channel recently!

Take care and have a good rest of the summer!

This place really is a must to visit. The maintenance of the Arboretum has improved over the past few years and labelling also has improved, so I know what I am looking at. Hope you can visit this place sometime in the future.

Take care and thanks for your comments![THUMBUP]

That must have been such a proud moment to see the girls on stage. It is nice to get a bit of home through your blog. Thank you [THUMBUP][HEART]

Yes, it is fun to see the granddaughters grow and develop. We lived in Davis, Ca from 1977 to 1996, so it feels like home. We are now in Sun City West, AZ since Oct. 2005. We raised our two sons in Davis, Ca, and the younger one moved back there, where they had our 3rd granddaughter, now just over 1 yr. old, but they will be moving to San Francisco, where he will start a new job next month. Did you live in SF? I know you are familiar with similar haunts that my wife and I used to inhabit, when I interned at San Francisco General Hospital. One place I know you are familiar with is Yet Wah(? spelling), a great little Chinese family restaurant.[THUMBUP][HEART]

Thanks for your comments, Lynnette. Look what you have to look forward to, what with your VERY large family: triplets also, if I remember correctly. You will probably have over a dozen grandchildren when the time comes! Hope your knee isn't giving you too much pain and you can get back into Karate![THUMBUP][HEART]

Thanks for stopping by and your comments. Playing by ear is truly a gift. My paternal grandmother could do that also. Yes, the Carolee Shields White Flower Garden with the accompanying Gazebo, is a great place for a wedding. The sign leading into the area says that the white flowers are especially beautiful by moonlight, but being an early to bed man, I never witnessed these at night![SMILE]

Amen, sister. I will take a long nap in the daytime, so can safely negotiate the trip to the Arboretum. We now live in Phoenix, Az but son, wife, and daughter presently live in Davis, Ca but will soon be living in San Francisco, Ca![THUMBUP][HEART][THUMBUP]

now thata a lot of piano's all playing at once[WINK] the photo's of the gardens remind me of our botanical park here in adelaide south australia[SMILE][THUMBUP]
  • elliott said 11 months ago
Yes, there are 10 pianos lined up on the stage, and each level of performers plays their piece simultaneously. It is amazing how the most advanced students who played Nocturne and The Hungarian Rapsody, could make it sound like one performer!. How is the weather down there in Australia? We are at record temps here most days: 110 in Phoenix, AZ!

We live now in Sun City West, Az, but I just read where Southwest Airlines will be flying into SF International airport soon, so we can access them easier that way. Take care and thanks for your input. I hadn't heard from you for awhile and was concerned.[THUMBUP][HEART]

its most unseasonal here as well high 30s hot north wind and fiiebans in place and spring a day away [THUMBUP]

I still prefer the hot weather to the cold, especially ice! Living in Nebraska until I left for California in 1970, we had extremes of weather from hot and humid to cold and icy!

It was lovely. I enjoyed the pictures.[HEART]

Thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed a few of the many pics I took. The sun was overhead and it was hard to get the right angle on many of the scenes, but I think I captured the essence of the northwest collections in UCD's Arboretum. Take care, Jeri.[THUMBUP]

We are starting to see a little cooler weather in the mornings and evenings here in the Phoenix AZ area, but still blasted hot in the day time!

A "must visit," if in the Sacramento, CA area, as Davis, Ca is only about 10 miles west of the capital. It seems that the maintenance of this Arboretum has improved markedly since I lived there from 1977 to 1996.[THUMBUP]

It is amazing how many different varieties of oak exists. Oaks are what make California so special. I think there is nothing more beautiful than hills full of huge oaks, even when the hills are brown.[THUMBUP]
